LA Phil, Yuval Sharon, and Meyer Sound Collaborate to Bring New Operas to Life

A shared passion for making the impossible happen was the foundation for the extraordinary multi-year collaboration between Meyer Sound, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Opera Director Yuval Sharon. World War II air raid sirens retrofitted with Meyer Sound’s very compact LINA loudspeakers gave invading aliens an eerie clarity in both Walt Disney Concert Hall and at three satellite sites in downtown Los Angeles for the LA Phil’s production of Yuval Sharon and Annie Gosfield’s new opera, War of the Worlds. Sharon’s reimagining of John Cage’s Europeras 1 & 2 challenged the sound team to create the acoustics of opera house sound in the cavernous and acoustically dry space of Sony Studios: Stage 23. Sound Designer Jody Elff's strategic speaker placement of primarily UPJ and UPM‑1P loudspeakers was critical in ensuring the warmth and beauty of the human voice, which was distributed throughout the venue.
