City Winery has emerged as a unique feast for the senses since its debut in Manhattan's highly selective SoHo district in December 2008. A 21,000-square-foot epicenter combining winemaking, gourmet dining, and live music, City Winery stands out from the crowded culinary scene with a world-class music venue reinforced by the award-winning M'elodie line array loudspeaker system from Meyer Sound. City Winery Founder and CEO Michael Dorf specified the M'elodie after successfully employing Meyer Sound systems in the famed Knitting Factory live venues that he formerly owned and operated. "Meyer Sound is the best, period," Dorf says. "At City Winery, we're using the definitive glassware, the most exclusive cheeses—we're only working with the elite. As a home for international acts, when you let them know you have a Meyer Sound system, you never have anyone say, 'I have to bring my own.' We're a Meyer venue, and there's nothing to improve on." A warm, open, and airy space, City Winery hangs four M'elodie line array loudspeakers on both sides of the stage, yielding uncommonly rewarding results. "The M'elodie has exactly what we were looking for: It doesn't blow away the people in the front, and it still can reach to people 75 feet back," says Dorf. "The vocal clarity is precise, deep, rich, and it sounds very true. For instrumentation we get a full, rich sound—anything plugged in is coming out very accurately." The system was designed by Ed Greer, general manager of operations at City Winery, in collaboration with Meyer Sound Tech Support, and installed by Brooklyn, NY-based Music First Productions. The M'elodie-based solution incorporates two Meyer Sound UPQ-1P wide coverage loudspeakers which anchor left and right fills for the far sides of the wide room, while frontfill is provided by three M1D-SM loudspeakers, a version of the M1D line array loudspeaker with alternate end plates for single-mount configurations with the M1D-MUB single mount U-bracket. The design also includes two 600-HP subwoofers, four UM-1P stage monitors, eight MM-4XP self-powered miniature loudspeakers and a Galileo loudspeaker management system. Together, the components have created a compelling sonic experience for artists such as Joan Osborne, Suzanne Vega, Lenny Kaye, Boz Scaggs, Philip Glass, Rufus Wainwright, and many more. "To have many of these performers come in and say, 'This is one of the greatest musical performance rooms that I've played in for many years' is a very high compliment," Dorf reflects. "City Winery spent a lot of time thinking about both the audience and the artist experience. We've nailed it with Meyer Sound." For City Winery's upcoming events, please visit www.citywinery.com.
