Tony Awards Applaud Broadway Productions Using Meyer Sound Systems
Music has the GRAMMY®, movies have the OSCARS®, and in the world of American theatre, the most coveted award is the Tony®. Bestowed upon the best shows on Broadway, the Tony Awards recognizes excellence in all aspects of theatrical production, from writing and performance to direction and choreography. This year the Tony Award Committee has added two new categories that many in the theatre world agree are long overdue: Best Sound Design of a Play and Best Sound Design of a Musical. Meyer Sound's loudspeakers and technologies have been entrusted to deliver many celebrated productions on Broadway and in London's West End, and so Tony's new award categories are particularly exciting for the company. An impressive list of Broadway productions featuring Meyer Sound systems will be spotlighted at this year's Tony Awards ceremony. Sound designers Ian Dickinson (Rock 'n' Roll), Adam Cork (Macbeth) and Simon Baker (Boeing-Boeing) have all been nominated in the Best Sound Design of a Play category, utilizing M1D line array loudspeakers and MM-4 miniature loudspeakers as well as the famed UltraSeries products including UPA-1P, UPA-2P and UPM-2P loudspeakers and USW-1P subwoofers. Christopher Cronin, Technical Supervisor for New York-based Sound Associates, has worked as the associate sound designer on numerous Broadway productions. Cronin confirms the dominance of Meyer Sound systems across the New York theatre circuit: "Since the early 1980s, Meyer Sound has been a de facto standard on Broadway," says Cronin. "I've been involved with many of these Tony-nominated plays, and in each one, Meyer Sound products have played a pivotal role in delivering crystal clear shows, eight performances per week. Now, for the first time, the Tony Award Committee is recognizing sound design with its own award category. It's great to see Meyer Sound products receiving the recognition they deserve." Other Tony-nominated productions using Meyer Sound systems include Grease, nominated for Best Revival of a Musical; Passing Strange, with multiple nominations including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score; and Xanadu, also nominated for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. Best Play nominees include The Seafarer, August: Osage County, and Rock 'n' Roll. Winners of the Tony Awards will be announced on June 15.
