Holland America Lines' new Vista class ships have taken the lead in introducing Meyer Sound's self-powered loudspeakers into shipboard entertainment systems where quality is critical. Beginning with the Zuiderdam and Oosterdam, and continuing with the soon-to-be-christened Westerdam, the Vista Class cruises are treating shipboard audiences to state-of-the-art sound through systems essentially the same as those used for hit Broadway shows and top-line concert tours.

In service for just over six months, the Oosterdam incorporates over 110 Meyer Sound loudspeakers into systems for eight different areas, focused primarily in entertainment lounge locations.

The bulk of the Oosterdam's self-powered loudspeaker complement – 75 units in all – is deployed in the surround sound system for the 760-seat showroom lounge. The main systems used here are the CQ-1 and CQ-2 wide- and narrow-coverage main loudspeakers, with deep bass reinforced by PSW-2 high-power flyable subwoofers. For fill and under-balcony delay systems, the design team specified the compact UPA-1P compact wide-coverage loudspeakers and the even smaller UPM-1P ultra-compact wide coverage loudspeaker. However, even the smaller speakers incorporate a special module that allows all critical performance parameters to be monitored on a computer using Meyer Sound's proprietary RMS remote monitoring system.

Other Meyer Sound systems on the Oosterdam include a 5.1 cinema surround system in a secondary lounge area, a disco nightclub system, weather resistant loudspeakers in the pool areas, and compact high fidelity units for the observation lounge and dining areas.

The entertainment venue loudspeaker systems for the Westerdam, scheduled for launch in April, are essentially the same as above, although an over-balcony delay ring in the main lounge has been updated to include a number of one of Meyer Sound's newest releases, the UPJ-1P compact VariO loudspeaker.
