Mississippi State Stadium Chooses Meyer Sound MILO in AV Upgrade
Davis Wade Stadium is the home of Mississippi State Bulldog football and the scene of blood-stirring clashes in the notoriously hard-hitting Southeastern Conference. The 55,000-capacity stadium in Starkville is now equipped with a high-impact AV system that delivers powerful and intelligible audio to the tiered bowl. A self-powered Meyer Sound system sits atop the venue's new scoreboard tower, while dazzling images flash across a 111-foot-by-47-foot HD video screen, the largest in the conference.
The entire new AV installation operates under the general supervision of Bennie Ashford, Mississippi State's coordinator of sports television. On the quality of sound, he comments: "We love it. It's a huge difference from what we had before. We are now hearing true bass, along with exceptional clarity in the mids and highs. Having that ability to hear the full range of sounds, particularly for music, is something our fans truly appreciate."
Referred to by most faithful fans as the "Dawg Pound," Davis Wade Stadium now boasts the newest of nine large-scale Meyer Sound sports venue systems designed and installed to date by Pro Sound, Inc., headquartered in Miami, Fla. Pro Sound Engineer Dave Shoemaker, working in collaboration with Meyer Sound Design Services, used the MAPP Online Pro acoustical prediction program to plot uniform coverage and assure both intelligibility and music-capable bandwidth at every seat in the stadium.
The long sides of the venue are covered by twin arrays of eight MILO line array loudspeakers each, with a center array of three MILO 60 narrow coverage loudspeakers targeting the far-end center sections. Near-end seating is handled by one MSL-4 loudspeaker per side, while full-bodied bass kicks out of four 700-HP subwoofers. A pair of SB-1 parabolic long-throw sound beams project coherent mid/high energy to the far corners, providing astonishingly clear voice articulation at a distance of over 500 feet.
"When you turn on the SB-1s, it's like hitting a clarity button—suddenly the speech is right in your face," remarks Shoemaker. An RMS remote monitoring system keeps tabs on the status of loudspeaker performance, and a Galileo loudspeaker management system provides processing functions.
Shoemaker appreciates Meyer Sound's self-powered technology, which enables him to deliver results efficiently and effectively. "This kind of scoreboard system is tailor-made for self-powered systems," he observes. "You already have power and infrastructure right there, which makes the installation easy to do and keeps the costs down."
Ashford admits that he was skeptical about the power potential when he first saw the Meyer Sound components, noticing that their total size was no more than the old system that was inadequate for the stadium. He was quickly reassured, however, during the initial system testing.
"The football team was at their practice field nearly a mile away, on the far side of the basketball coliseum," Ashford recalls. "The first day we played content through the system, I got a call from a member of the coaching staff who asked, 'What's that sound we're hearing?' They were hearing it clearly that far away, and could understand everything being said. I knew right then that we had a winner."
